What is PRP Therapy?

Platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, is a concentrate substance of a protein derived from blood. Through a process it is centrifuged to remove red blood cells leaving only the plasma itself, which contains proteins and healing factors that help cells grow and promotes healing when injected.

PRP injections are commonly used to treat chronic pain in joints and tendon problems such as tennis elbow, achilles tendonitis in the ankle, and jumper’s knee… pain in the patellar tendon of the knee.

When damaged tissue (which produces pain in certain parts of the body) is detected, the application of PRP therapy helps your body grow new healthy cells which promotes healing of the affected area.

This kind of treatment is commonly used in sports because of  the process it has to help healthy cells to grow.

What is the Purpose of PRP?

The main purpose of this kind of therapy is to help the patient to heal injuries faster. The applications of these injections can include:

Tendon Injuries: Tendons connect muscles with bones. Injuries in these bands can make it almost impossible to move. Such injuries include: Achilles tendonitis, jumpers knee and tennis elbow.

Osteoarthritis: For treating this condition PRP injections has been proven to be more effective than Hyaluronic acid injections, which is the most common treatment, helping to recover movement and reducing inflammation and pain faster.

Postsurgical Repair: Very effective to repair tendons or ligaments after surgery, reducing recovery time.

Sport Injuries: PRP therapy injections are commonly used to treat sport injuries like knee sprains or pulled hamstrings also reducing recovery time, inflammation, and helping recover mobility faster.

What is the PRP Therapy Process?

First is very important to remember, this process has to be done by an specialist, please do not jeopardize your health. We are specialist with many years of experience treating injuries and applying PRP therapy.

The process is as followed:

  1. Our specialist will take a blood sample, aprox 20 ml, this may vary according to the kind of PRP therapy that will be applied.
  2. The blood will be places in a centrifuge to separate the blood components in a process that takes aprox 15 minutes.
  3. The specialist will take the plasma to prepare the injection that will be applied.
  4. The doctor will determine the place in the injured area to apply the injection.

Does PRP Therapy Have Side Effects?

As we explained above, the injection is made with blood extracted from your body. This reduces the risk of a side effects or an allergic reaction. However there does exist a high risk of a major problem if you try to do the injections yourself or if you look for assistance of a person who is not a professional. These problems can be:

  • Nerve/ Tendon Damage
  • Tissue Damage
  • Infections
  • Pain/ bruises in the injected zone

How Fast Can I Recover from a PRP Therapy Injection?

Considering it is a treatment in a injured area, which needs to heal, after the PRP therapy  the specialist will recommend to rest fora fast recovery.  After receiving the PRP therapy you will notice a big difference in your mobility and less pain. After a couple days or weeks you will little by little  start recovering mobility faster.

I pulled a muscle liftings weights in the morning and by the afternoon I wasn’t able to move my neck to the left.  I carefully drove to Dr. Patel’s office and was immediately taken care of. Dr. Patel has a great way of explaining what has occurred to cause your pain and gives you the proper understanding of what needs to be done in order to solve the problem.

David M., Los Angeles CA

My brother referred me to Dr. Patel a few months ago after tiring of my complaints of neck/back pain from a car accident. I finally worked up the courage to go. The only word I can think of to describe this man is AMAZING. He is simply amazing! I’ve had three treatments so far and I feel like a new person!
