SPINAL DECOMPRESSION 2018-04-24T01:14:36+00:00

What Is Spinal Decompression?

Spinal decompression is a type of traction therapy applied to the spine that involves a traction table or similar motorized device, with the goal of relieving back pain and/or leg pain by stretching the spine. This procedure is called nonsurgical decompression therapy.

What are the Benefits of this Therapy?

The benefits include:

  • Create a negative intradiscal pressure to promote retraction or repositioning of the herniated or bulging disc material.
  • Create a lower pressure in the disc that will cause an influx of healing nutrients and other substances into the disc.

Who Can Use This Type of Therapy?

It is recommended as a treatment for patients with lower back pain, sciatica (leg pain), or neck pain caused by a herniated disc, bulging disc, or degenerated disc.

But stretching the spine to relieve back pain is not appropriate for some patients such:

  • Pregnant patients
  • Osteoporosis
  • Lumbar and vertebral compression
  • Patients with an artificial disc, or implants in the spine
  • Anyone who has had multiple surgeries without recovery.
  • Patients with failed back surgery
  • Patients with broken vertebrae
  • Patients with spinal fusion/ infection or tumors

Is Spinal Decompression Safe?

Yes, spinal decompression therapy is safe, comfortable and painless. Commonly supported by advanced equipment that contain sensitive computer-feedback mechanisms designed to convert mechanical motion into an electronic signal.  This allows the equipment to continuously monitor muscular reaction and to compensate by re-adjusting it’s parameters. This makes the process very safe.

How Is the Procedure?

The procedure consist in approximately twenty spinal decompression sessions. The frequency will be determined with the specialist in regards to your particular situation and can be from daily to weekly, where each session lasts approximately 30 minutes.

Decompression therapy is performed on patients while fully clothed.  The specialist will do some modifications in the angle of distraction, position of the spine, and the amount of force applied in order to target appropriate spinal levels.

Spinal decompression can relieve pressure on the spinal nerves and is helpful for conditions such as sciatica and facet syndrome. It is also used to treat acute or chronic neck or low back pain.  If neck or low back symptoms have not been resolved with other types of treatment, spinal decompression therapy can be an excellent option for patients with a disc bulge/ herniation, degenerative disc disease, facet syndrome, sciatica and spinal stenosis.

I pulled a muscle liftings weights in the morning and by the afternoon I wasn’t able to move my neck to the left.  I carefully drove to Dr. Patel’s office and was immediately taken care of. Dr. Patel has a great way of explaining what has occurred to cause your pain and gives you the proper understanding of what needs to be done in order to solve the problem.

My brother referred me to Dr. Patel a few months ago after tiring of my complaints of neck/back pain from a car accident. I finally worked up the courage to go. The only word I can think of to describe this man is AMAZING. He is simply amazing! I’ve had three treatments so far and I feel like a new person!
